Do you need resources for Seaweek? Are you planning a science unit on the sea?
In this online PD session recorded on 18 February 2016, PD provider and teacher Barb Ryan explores some of the Science Learning Hub resources that are available to support classroom learning for Seaweek.
Very useful, lots of excellent insight into resources we are able to use within our school!
Teacher
This session will help you to track down teaching content for Seaweek 2016 Toiora te Moana – Toiora te Tangata – Healthy Seas, Healthy People as well as give you ideas for any marine science programme/unit you may be planning.
This PLD session was based on the legacy Science Learning Hub however all the resources are still available on the new-look Science Learning Hub site.

This was a great way to see how we can use this in our classrooms in more depth than we have previously.

With a uniquely New Zealand focus, Young Ocean Explorers aims to get kids the world over enthused about the beauty and diversity of our marine life.
Although this presentation was specifically developed for Seaweek 2016 – the resources from the Science Learning Hub can be used for any student learning relating to marine or conservation contexts.
Thanks for today’s PD. We had a small group of interested teachers who met together to watch your PD over afternoon tea. Everyone was staggered by the amount of information available and also the wealth of practical activities – cutting out newspaper fish and displaying them on newspaper to demonstrate the advantage of camouflage was one that springs to mind. We will definitely be using the interactive charts too. (We liked the tip to laminate some of the web charts and use them as classroom resources too.)

Nature of Science
Students are given opportunities to ask questions, find evidence, explore simple models and carry out appropriate investigations to develop simple explanations. These opportunities engender much scientific discussion and sharing of ideas.
Activity idea
In this activity cut fish shapes out of newspaper and glue them onto sheets of newspaper to demonstrate concepts about camouflage.
