Simon Pearson from Auckland University of Technology (AUT) explains how 1RM is predicted from repeated activity and arithmetical calculations.

    SIMON PEARSON
One RM is one Repetition Max. It’s basically a measure of maximal strength, normally 1RM is calculated rather than actually determined. So rather than continually loading up until the athlete can only lift, only just lift that one repetition it would do for instance a weight that they can do three, or four, or five times, and from that depending on the weight, how many repetitions they did, you can calculate their 1RM.
