This online PD session, recorded on 18 February 2015, focuses on using Science Learning Hub earthquake resources to plan an Earth and Space science unit. It models how a variety of resources can be incorporated within the teaching and learning of a unit and draws on the examples from an existing unit plan on earthquakes.
The starting point in the video is the context overview pdf to highlight a possible pathway through the Hub's earthquake resources. The individual resources identified in this pathway are then explored. (Note: the new-look SLH does not hold the context overview pdf. It has been replaced with an interacting planning pathway. Using the topic tab and choosing earthquakes will also direct you to the resources mentioned in the video.)
Links from Science Learning Hub resources that could support teaching and learning leading to assessment using Achievement Standard 90955 and 90952 are indicated, and ways to link to Nature of Science and the Science Capabilities are highlighted within the session.
This PLD session was based on the legacy Science Learning Hub however all the resources are still available on the new-look Science Learning Hub site.
Although aimed at secondary level, the concepts covered can be applied in primary classrooms.

Nature of science
Aspects of Communicating in Science and Investigating in Science are introduced that can draw on Science Learning Hub media and teaching and learning approaches. The PD session also models ways to use the Science Capabilities ‘Interpreting representations’ and ‘Using evidence’ to develop these Nature of Science aspects.
Uncovering our explosive past
Explore our Volcanoes resources to find other useful teaching and learning materials. How do volcanoes work? Where do they form? What does this mean for the people that live around them? Meet the scientists finding the answers to these questions.
