Do your bit for conservation by helping control wilding pine seedlings on the Waihaha Great Lake Trail, by the Western Bays of Lake Taupō.
Wilding conifers (including Douglas Fir) are a serious threat to the local ecosystems. They seed and grow every easily in this region, creating competition for New Zealand's native flora and fauna. Left unchecked, this wilding plantation will continue to grow and infect other nearby sites.
Come and help pull out wilding pine seedlings from beneath a mature stand as part of the ongoing wilding conifer control project. This is part of the Mahi Aroha Summer Programme 2024 presented by Project Tongariro and Department of Conservation.
Location: Waihaha Great Lake Trails, 4478–4184 Western Bay Road, Waihāhā, Turangi
