World Wetlands Day is held on 2 February annually to celebrate the 1971 adoption of the International Convention on Wetlands in the Iranian City of Ramsar.
Each year there is a new theme for World Wetlands Day and events are held throughout the country and this year the theme is Wetland Restoration.
The call to action is an appeal to invest financial, human and political capital to save the world’s wetlands from disappearing and to restore those we have degraded.
Examples of some of the events around the country are below. For more ideas see the Wetland Trust website.
- World Wetland Day free kayak (Whau River and Waitemata Harbour, Auckland)
- World Wetland Festival at Matuku Link (Auckland)
- World Wetlands Day Celebration (Online celebration of World Wetlands Day with Great Marsh Institute)
